Herbal Tea for Tension Headaches

Tension headaches result when muscles tighten in the neck and the back of the head in response to "the daily grind," which is why they typically occur late in the day. Practicing relaxation techniques and exercises that combine conscious movement with breathing such as meditation and yoga can help a great deal, as well as enlisting the aid of herbs with mild sedative properties. For example, American skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) has been used for centuries to counter anxiety, insomina, and stress-related headaches, and it's primary constituent, scutellarin, is currently being studied for its ability to inhibit inflammatory processes associated with neurodegenerative diseases and stroke. Passionflower, a source of harmala alkaloids, has been used as a mild sedative since the 16th century and is still widely used in Germany and France today. Lemon balm and chamomile also have a long history of use and a reputation for promoting relaxation. Ingredients 3 parts lemon balm 3 parts chamomile 2 parts skullcap 1 part passionflower Directions Combine the herbs in a bowl and cover with boiling water. Cover and steep for 5-10 minutes; strain, composting the herbal material and reserving the liquid. Serve with stevia powder or other sweetener, if desired.
