Turmeric May Help to Prevent Glaucoma

Turmeric, and it’s primary active constituent, curcumin, has undergone considerable study in recent years for its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and its potential application in preventing and treating neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. Now, British scientists have developed an eye drop formulation that features curcumin that may help to prevent blindness.

According to researchers at UCL’s Institute of Ophthalmology and the UCL School of Pharmacy, administering the drops to glaucoma-induced rats twice daily for three weeks significantly decreased the loss of nerve cells and the deterioration of the optic nerve, which leads to glaucoma and vision loss.
