Herbal Mouthwash Recipes

Most conventional mouthwashes contain ingredients that may pose health risks, including fluoride and artifical colors and sweeteners. Fortunately, you can easily make your own dental care products like mouthwash using herbal tinctures instead that offer antimicrobial properties and the right amount of astringency to help keep gums healthy. Thanks to our friends at Mountain Rose Herbs for these recipes!

Everyday Herbal Mouthwash

This is a great recipe to use each day after brushing. The calendula, white oak bark, and myrrh are anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and astringent to clean and protect.

1 cup organic Rose bud or petal tea, brewed strong and cooled to room temperature
½ oz organic Calendula tincture
¼ oz organic White Oak Bark tincture
¼ oz Myrrh tincture

Directions:

Combine all ingredients together in an amber bottle with a tight-fitting lid and store in the refrigerator. If teeth are sensitive to cold,  either let the solution come to room temperature before using or mix it with a little hot water to warm up. Swish a mouthful or two each day for 30 seconds and then spit out. If you desire a fresh, minty flavor, add a few drops of peppermint extract.
