Wiccaning Ritual
| A
Wiccaning is a baby naming ceremony, similar to a Christian Baptism but
with the understanding that the child shall be free to choose his or her
own path later in life. The following is a sample ritual for this
occasion.
Excerpted from Grimoire for the Green Witch: A Complete Book of Shadows Have: anointing oil, small basin of blessed water, incense and burner; Altar candles; decorated pillar candle to be the Wiccaning candle; clean, soft towel; Altar decorations may include flowers such as Baby's Breath and yellow baby roses; food may include white cake; may have presents for child that reflect the Craft, such as a quilt in a design of forest animals, a stuffed animal toy, etc. Note: Baby may be held by Goddess and God Parents (or Fairy Godmother and Fairy Godfather) outside the Circle until called inside. 1. Both parents light the Wiccaning candle and Officiator or parents call for the baby. The light of our love is kindled; bring the fruit of love into the Circle. 2. Parents take the baby and hold the infant up before Altar; Officiator or parent says: Loving Lady and Gracious Lord, behold the harvest of [our] love, named [N]. Watch over and bless this child, bringing love and joy to all of [his or her] days. 3. Officiator or one parent anoints the baby's brow with oil in the Solar Cross sigil (a circle with a cross drawn over it): May the Lady and the Lord guide you and teach you. 4. One parent holds the baby over the basin and Officiator or other parent cups some of the blessed water in one hand and gently pours it over the top of the baby's head, then wipes the runoff with the towel: May the Elementals Earth and Water guard and protect you; cherish and comfort you. 5. Parent holding the baby passes the baby over the incense burner through the smoke, or Officiator passes the smoke around the baby being held: May the Elementals Air and Fire enhance your life, that you grow in wisdom and stamina, in harmony with the Earth, the Moon, the Sun, the Stars, and the Unity of the Divine. 6. Everyone in the Circle passes by the child and offers their individual blessing: May the love of the Goddess and the God be with you always. 7. Presents may be offered to the baby now or at the Simple Feast. Proceed to Esbat Conclusion or Cakes & Wine of the Circle Casting |
